Unique International Perspective
The firm's founder, Randy S. Kramer, has been practising law for over 20 years and is licensed in four countries: the US, Canada, England & Wales.
This unique combination of education and experience allows us to be ideally positioned to understand and successfully work on matters from a truly international perspective.
Our cross-border focus takes the form of drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a whole host of different types of agreements under the laws of the US, Canada, England & Wales, and elsewhere. It also involves providing comprehensive legal advice, being present for our clients when they need it most, dealing with governments and other third parties, and litigating contentious matters when necessary.
In addition to numerous other legal services, we also provide legal and regulatory support in bringing our clients’ operations into compliance with domestic and international laws and keeping them in compliance.
Common Law vs. Civil Law
When it comes to international law, there are significant differences between jurisdictions that follow the common law (which originated in England) and those that follow the civil law (which originated in France and Italy). In fact, most countries in the world use civil law systems.
Even though civil law is so widespread internationally, most lawyers trained in the common law do not learn the complexities and nuances of the civil law and how they render the civil law substantially different from the common law.
Randy is a fully qualified civil law lawyer, having received a B.C.L. in Civil Law from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He then became a member of the Barreau du Québec (the province of Quebec is a civil law jurisdiction despite that the rest of Canada follows the common law). He also received a J.D. from McGill University, a common law degree.
When it comes to international legal matters, thorough knowledge of both the civil law and the common law is essential to a true understanding of complex cross-border dealings.
Bilingual Legal Practice
Even though English is often thought of as being the language of international business, when practicing international law it is highly recommended that one be fluent in more than one language. Experience has shown time and again that being able to talk to people in their native language is a distinct asset. We are fluent in both English and French.
Appreciation of Other Cultures
It is crucial in the practice of international law to recognize that people in different parts of the world have diverse cultures and distinctive ways of doing things. The highly effective international lawyer is sensitive to this, takes the time to understand it, and modifies his or her approach accordingly.
